“Think of the magic of that foot, comparatively small, upon which your whole weight rests. It’s a miracle, and the dance…is a celebration of that miracle.” - Martha Washington

Performance Tip #4

Tip #4- Set the Stage

Make sure the stage is free of debris.  Check the curtain for gaps or tears and tape, stitch or pin accordingly.  Test the curtain for spacing (does it need to be pulled in tightly or left slightly out in order to accomodate the cast?).  Bring marking tape to indicate center stage, prop spots, and key characters’ places.

Check lighting for color and coverage.  Test black outs, and have a rehearsal for backstage assitants.  Make sure they know what props to cover and have a list of what goes on stage when.

Take a deep breath!  It’s almost time to enjoy the show!

Performance Tip #3

Tip #3- While Waiting

Encourage students to bring a quiet activity to keep them occupied while waiting.  The chaos of the backstage world can be minimized with a few good activities.

I encouraged the kids to bring a book to read or a quiet game to play.  I’ve had parents bring in coloring books and crayons (no markers!), an AquaDoodle Mat, or puzzles.  Card games can keep multiple students entertained in a quiet fashion.

Inform the company families of your backstage preferences in advance.  Let students know what types of activities are ok (books, drawing, puzzles, and games) and which items to leave home (cell phones, music players, electronic toys, and items with small pieces).

Performance Tip #2

Tip #2- Have Extras

Don’t be afraid to over purchase accessories.  Extra sets of gloves, hair accessories, tights, and bunny ears… yes, bunny ears- will ease the stress when something goes missing at the last minute.

Somehow we ended up with two sets of bunny ears for three bunnies.  This wouldn’t have been much of a problem a week before the production.  Of course, this was the day of the production.  We were blessed with willing hands and a well-stocked supply company in order to meet this last-minute need.  All three of our bunnies had their ears on performance night!

Performance Tip #1

Tip #1- Trial Hair & Makeup

If you are either a new stage parent or if you have new stage parents in your studio, be sure to do a hair and make-up run through sometime before the dress rehearsal.  Knowing the right amount of make-up to apply is as important as knowing which shades work best for the stage.  Likewise, the proper bun will vary from studio to studio.  Give it a trial run!

The Velveteen Rabbit- A Success!

At this time last week, we were in the middle of our dress rehearsal for The Velveteen Rabbit benefit production.  It was a sea of tutus and buns.

Just two weeks prior, I thought there was no possible way the production would come together.  But I was beyond pleased the night of the show.  God was so faithful to make the production a success.

The turnout was great, the students danced their hearts out, and the exhausted team of helpers smiled with joy and relief as the show came to a close.  And I must admit that we are looking forward to our spring production.

Coming next week: performance tips and ideas!

Back to Blogging

After some (well quite a bit) of time off from blogging, I am back!  There has been so much exciting news from Dance to You over the past several months.  The first bit is the opening of the Academy of Ballet this past August.  Things have progressed so well, and we feel very blessed!

Currently we have classes in ballet (ages 3 and up), tap, jazz, liturgical, and pointe.  Additional classes will be announced shortly!
